Who I am
Genesis is made by Gustavo (Gus) Zegarra, an individual developer in the United States (“I”, “me”). For the purposes of data protection law, I’m the controller for the small amount of personal information described below. You can reach me at [SUPPORT EMAIL].
What I collect
Nothing, through the app. Genesis doesn’t send me, or anyone else, information about you or how you use it. It has no account system, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party code that collects data. That’s why its App Store privacy label says “Data Not Collected”.
The only personal information I ever receive is what you decide to send me yourself, for example a support email. That’s covered under Feedback and support below.
This website doesn’t use cookies, analytics or tracking either. Like any website, the company hosting it may keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses and the pages requested) for security and to keep the site running.
What stays on your iPhone
Everything you make in Genesis is stored in the app’s private storage on your iPhone: songs, lyrics, chords, sections, recordings, versions, tags, track settings and your app settings. I have no access to any of it.
- Backups. If iCloud Backup is on, your iPhone includes your Genesis songs in its backup, the same way it backs up other apps. That backup is stored by Apple under Apple’s Privacy Policy. I can’t access it. Genesis 1.0 doesn’t sync songs between devices.
- Microphone. Genesis asks for the microphone so it can record when you tap record, and for punch-in, the tuner and letting you hear yourself in headphones. It isn’t used at any other time. You can turn it off in Settings › Genesis.
- Speech recognition. Live Lyrics turns your recordings into words on your iPhone, using a speech model that runs on the device and Apple’s on-device speech recognition. Your recordings aren’t uploaded for this.
- Key and tempo. Key Finder and Tempo Finder use Apple’s music analysis, which runs on your iPhone.
- Stems. Splitting a recording into vocals, instruments, bass and drums uses a model that’s built into the app and runs on your iPhone.
- Suggestions. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Genesis may use Apple’s on-device language model to suggest titles and section names. This also runs on your iPhone.
- Beta builds only. TestFlight builds keep a few simple counts on your iPhone (for example how long it took to make your first recording). They’re never sent automatically. You can copy them into feedback if you want to.
When Genesis goes online
Genesis works offline. It only uses the internet for the things below, and none of them sends your songs, lyrics or recordings anywhere.
| What | Who it connects to | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Live Lyrics speech model (about 250 MB), downloaded once, on Wi-Fi, the first time you use Live Lyrics | Hugging Face (huggingface.co), which hosts the model files | Nothing about you or your songs. As with any download, their servers see your IP address and basic request details. See Hugging Face’s privacy policy. |
| Grand Piano sound, downloaded the first time you choose it | Apple, which hosts the sound for the App Store | A standard download request, handled under Apple’s Privacy Policy. |
| Genesis Pro purchases, trials, renewals and restores | The App Store (Apple) | Apple handles payment and your Apple Account. I never see your name, email or payment details. The app only learns from Apple, on your iPhone, whether you have Genesis Pro. |
| Links you tap, such as this website or Apple’s terms | The website you open | Whatever that website normally receives. |
Feedback and support
When you email me, or use Send Feedback in the app (which opens your own Mail app), I receive what you send: your email address, your message, any screenshot you attach and, if you leave “Include diagnostics” on, technical details: the app version, iPhone model, iOS version, the audio device in use and a short recording log. The log never includes your lyrics or audio. I use this only to answer you and fix problems.
Information Apple shares with developers
- TestFlight. If you test a beta, Apple shares with me what TestFlight collects, such as the name and email you were invited with, the feedback and screenshots you send, crash reports, and basic device and usage information. See Apple’s TestFlight terms.
- Crash reports and App Analytics. If you’ve turned on Share With App Developers in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements, Apple may share crash reports and usage statistics with me. They don’t identify you, and you can turn this off at any time.
Third parties
Genesis contains no third-party analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking code. It doesn’t sell or share personal information, and doesn’t track you across other apps or websites. The open-source software it’s built with (listed in Settings › Help & About › Acknowledgements) runs on your iPhone and doesn’t send data anywhere.
How long things are kept
- Your songs stay on your iPhone until you delete them. A deleted song moves to Recently Deleted for 30 days, then it’s gone. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your iPhone. Copies in your iPhone’s backups follow Apple’s backup rules.
- Downloaded models and sounds stay on your iPhone until you delete the app. They aren’t included in your backups.
- Support emails are kept while I help you, then deleted within 12 months, or sooner if you ask.
Your choices and rights
You’re in control on your iPhone: delete any song, empty Recently Deleted, turn the microphone or speech recognition off in Settings › Genesis, set Live Lyrics to Off in the app, or delete the app.
Because the app doesn’t collect personal data, the only information I could hold about you is what you’ve emailed me. You can ask me to show you, correct or delete it at [SUPPORT EMAIL], and I’ll answer within 30 days.
If you’re in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom
When you email me, I use your message on the basis of my legitimate interest in answering you and improving Genesis (GDPR and UK GDPR, Article 6(1)(f)). You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the use of your personal data, to receive a copy of it, and to complain to your local data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office). I’m based in the United States, so emails you send me are handled there; I rely on your request to communicate with me for that transfer.
If you’re in California or another US state with a privacy law
In the past 12 months I haven’t collected personal information through the app, and I don’t sell or share personal information, or use it for targeted advertising or profiling. You have the right to know what personal information I hold (only what you’ve emailed me), to have it corrected or deleted, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. Contact me at [SUPPORT EMAIL].
Children
Genesis is a general-audience app. It doesn’t collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). If you think a child has emailed me personal information, let me know and I’ll delete it.
Security
Your songs are protected by your iPhone’s built-in security, including its encryption when you use a passcode. Downloads use encrypted connections (HTTPS).
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, I’ll update this page and the date at the top. If Genesis ever starts collecting data, I’ll say so here and in the app’s release notes before it happens, and ask for your permission where the law requires it.
